LCL YLI LEAD Core Program was co-founded in 2006 by a group of women committed to helping African American and Latina adolescent girls (ages 12-18) define themselves as women. Since it’s humble beginnings as a 8-week self-esteem mentoring program Youth LEAD has evolved into a 12-week leadership development program for diverse young women designed to help girls to understand themselves as individuals, members of their community and leaders in society. Through our weekly 2 hour workshop series young girls have the opportunity to progress through each of our three modules. Understanding ourselves as individuals focuses on self-esteem, mental health and physical well-being. Becoming members of our community redefines how young women look at and engage with their “disenfranchised” neighborhoods as they learn to identify and connect with the assets in their communities. Leading in society integrates ones sense of self, community and culture into a model of leadership that encourages and calls young women into their uniquely defined roles as leaders.

LCL Co-founder, Monika Black was honored as a community advocate for her work inspiring girls and women to accomplish their goals and life purpose. Other awardees were honored for their roles as community legends, energizers and innovators. Please click here to see a full list of honorees. A wonderful afternoon of festivities included traditional performances highlighting the cultures of each awardee as well as performances by Global Girls’ Everyday People Theatre. LCL’s TOV was on fire as she performed her hit song “Killin It,” celebrating all that we accomplish despite those forces that try to hold us back!



At a critical time in history, when issues of women’s rights and our bodies are being brought into question by those in power, we  sincerely thank and honor the leadership of Marvenetta Woodley-Penn, the young women of Global Girls, all of the other awardees  and each of the performers for their important work improving the lives of diverse women throughout society. Together we rise!

LCL is at an exciting point in our development! This year we have already launched our new website, launched a new leadership program for youth and expanded our Youth LEAD Institute core programs. As a part of our goals for 2012 we have been working on our program curriculum book for our Youth LEAD Institute and are nearly complete. Now we need your help!

LCL is hosting a  Curriculum Illustration Contest! We are currently looking for someone to design the cover of our 2012 program curriculum book. The curriculum consists of a 25-page self esteem mentoring book for diverse adolescent girls. This is an excellent opportunity for artists who are passionate about women and/or the community and would like to make a significant contribution to a growing program. Although our budget is small we believe in supporting those who support us. Therefore, there will be a $75.00 cash reward for the artist whose picture is selected for the cover.

Please contact LCL at info@lascaraslindas.com by April 13th, 2012 if you are interested in submitting your work. The final piece will be due by April 20th so that it can be published by the time our Youth LEAD Institute program starts in May.

We are having an art auction component at our March 22nd event at WMG
and want you to participate!

Women Made Gallery (685 N. Milwaukee, Chicago, IL  60642) on March 22, 2012 (6:00 PM – 9:00 PM).
All proceeds will support the 2012 LCL Youth LEAD Institute! 


In celebration of International Women’s Month in March,
we are inviting you to depict your version of what you believe
the “Spirit” of an Everyday LEADing Women looks like.

You can either provide a current donation or utilize a 12” X 12” canvas
provided by LCL which you can utilize to express your own depiction.

…when you hear the drums,

And your waist will follow,

Your hips, then your thighs, as well as your knees,

Down to your calves,

Til’ it finally reaches the soles of your feet.

You see it knows.

It knows that the beating of the drum is as familiar to the soul as oxygen is to the lung.

You cannot deny your body that-

You cannot take away from it what has always been,

Carefullyplaced before your verybirth,

The drumming of your mother’s very heart, being the first.

So move, My sister – Move!

Allow your spirit to dance.

Allow your arms to transform into wings,

And fly!

Soar so high above humanity that it is only

YOU, and the STARS, and the MOON.

Raise your arms up, as to praise him.

Fling them out to your sides, as to propel yourself forward.

As you stride forward, then back,

Tap the ball of each foot to the ground twice,

Paying homage to the past and this precious gift we now have called present.

Now move! Sista, Move!

I suspect the only thing that got our ancestors through –

When their body’s were weary,

Their feet all bloodied and severely pained,

Their minds and spirits drained –

The only thing that carried them,

Was the sound –

The pounding of the drums.

God collaborated with Mother Earth and the Universe,

Las Caras Lindas (LCL) and Diaspora Spirit brought back the Sister Sunday Brunch with a bang! It was absolutely reinvigorating to see all of the women of LCL and Disapora Spirit together once again! We truly appreciated everyone’s presence in the room, including youth, volunteers, program participants and guests. It was so wonderful to learn more about each other, to share our passion and to make truly meaningful connections that help us to move forward, individually and collectively.

YLI Core Program Overview

The 2011 Youth LEAD Institute (YLI) was the begining of a new era for LCL. Under the direction of a new Management, LCL partnered with a new cohort of young girls on their journey to defining themselves as women. The 2011 program participants were guided through the LCL curriculum through a series of group discussion, workshops,  creative expression activities (e.g., journaling, photo voice journaling and art work), service opportunities and cultural excursion trips through Chicago’s ethnic communities. Programs, diversityLCL presented at i.c. Stars 2012 MLK Day Stakeholders meeting. Throughout the afternoon there were various presenters focused on global leadership, diversity, community impact, etc. LCL was introduced by Tyrone Stoudemire and presented on diversity and the ways in oppression limits diverse girls and women in our development and the need to create opportunities to shift our focus towards a strengths-based model that encourages the growth and the development of our talents regardless of who we are. A wonderfully engaging and thought provoking time was had by all! Thanks to i.c. stars for partnership and congrats to their team for their continued success!
