YLI Core Program Overview

The 2011 Youth LEAD Institute (YLI) was the begining of a new era for LCL. Under the direction of a new Management, LCL partnered with a new cohort of young girls on their journey to defining themselves as women. The 2011 program participants were guided through the LCL curriculum through a series of group discussion, workshops, creative expression activities (e.g., journaling, photo voice journaling and art work), service opportunities and cultural excursion trips through Chicago’s ethnic communities. See below for an overview of all the activities that our youth participated in during the 2011 program year.

LCL Launches 2012 Youth LEAD Program

LCL Youth LEAD program was co-founded in 2006 by a group of women committed to helping African American and Latina adolescent girls (ages 12-18) define themselves as women. Since it’s humble beginnings as a 8-week self-esteem mentoring program Youth LEAD has evolved into a 12-week leadership development program for diverse young women designed to help girls to understand themselves as individuals, members of their community and leaders in society. Through our weekly 2 hour workshop series young girls have the opportunity to progress through each of our three modules. Understanding ourselves as individuals focuses on self-esteem, mental health and physical well-being. Becoming members of our community redefines how young women look at and engage with their “disenfranchised” neighborhoods as they learn to identify and connect with the assets in their communities. Leading in society integrates ones sense of self, community and culture into a model of leadership that encourages and calls young women into their uniquely defined roles as leaders. LCL Speaks at I.C. Stars MLK Celebration

LCL presented at i.c. Stars 2012 MLK Day Stakeholders meeting. Throughout the afternoon there were various presenters focused on global leadership, diversity, community impact, etc. LCL was introduced by Tyrone Stoudemire and presented on diversity and the ways in oppression limits diverse girls and women in our development and the need to create opportunities to shift our focus towards a strengths-based model that encourages the growth and the development of our talents regardless of who we are. A wonderfully engaging and thought provoking time was had by all! Thanks to i.c. stars for partnership and congrats to their team for their continued success!

LEAD-Ex Panel Discussion

Las Caras Lindas (LCL) is a start-up non-profit organization dedicated to helping Black and Latina girls and women to collectively define themselves as women. Over the years, LCL realized the need that in order to fully support the healthy development of young girls that one must also support the community of women that surround them. For this reason, LCL developed the LEAD Expo (LEAD Ex).

LEAD Ex is a program designed to “LEAD” change among Black and Brown women, of all ages, together, towards a more collective future. The goals are to create the space for Black and Latina women to become collectively aware of their strengths and talents, to expose young girls to successful women of various backgrounds and experiences, and to highlight the wide array of knowledge, wisdom and power that exists in diverse women of all ages.

Each year LCL’s YLI LEAD Program introduces young girls to leading community women. The 2011 panel consisted of Jackie Covarrubias and LCL Summer Intern and student at Notre Dame University, Juanita Irizarry, Program Officer at The Chicago Community Trust, Olga M. Marroquin, Author of Liberating Mella, Eleanor Richards, Northern Trust Bank, Arabel Alva Rosales, J.D., CEO and President of AAR & Associates, . The panel spoke about their roles as leaders in the community, provided opportunities for youth to ask questions about becoming leading women in society and engaged in small group coaching sessions on how to present as a leading lady.

LCLs Loving, Learning and Letting Go Art Workshop 2011

Olga Marroquin, Author of Liberating Mella led the 2011 LCL Youth Core Program participants through Loving, Learning, and Letting Go Workshop. Based on her Damaged Goods Workshop, LCL participants focused on artistically expressing the process of self discovery and self acceptance. The workshop encouraged each young woman to explore three important areas in the journey to self love: Liberation, Expansion and culture. Watch our video!
